Washington D.C was founded on July 16, 1790 by George Washington; it was established by the constitution to serve as the nation’s capital in 1800. Since George Washington, was the first president of the United States the nation’s capital was given his name. He chose the site and appointed three commissioners to help prepare for the arrival of the new government in 1800. In 1800 the federal government consisted of 131 employees. From the beginning it has been embroiled in political maneuvering, sectional conflicts, and issues of race, national identity, compromise, and of course power. Washington, D.C sits along two main rivers the Potomac and the Anacostia rivers; which served as regional shipping centers for tobacco and wheat.
