The book Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen has many interesting characters, themes and has many ups and downs such as the death of Jacobs parents, rendering him lost and unsure what steps he needs to take in order to find himself again. As well as a battle with his love for a woman he can't have. Jacob is a very well respected character who holds high values and although he struggles due to always helping others, he always puts in a solid effort. The real downfall is with Jacob Jankowski and his love for all life. Although August is the main antagonist who causes many problems for Jacob, if Jacob didn't have these qualities for caring for animals and people, his life would have been much easier throughout the story.

Through these reasons it is obvious why Jacob starts to catch feeling for her. Jacob keeps being the honorable man he’s and keeps his love more of a secret once he finds out she’s married. Further on as the story progresses Jacob comes to realization that Marlena isn't living the happy love life as he feels she deserves. Once a mixture of greed and his love for life settle in he starts to lose some of his honor and this is where his first grave mistake settles. This is impactful to Jacob's life in the circus because he really starts to sympathize for Marlena and how she's been treated knowing he can do so much better. The reason that this is his biggest mistake is because if August found out that he started getting to know Marlena better than just co workers he could very easily get Jacob thrown out. Jacob struggles greatly fighting himself over what he should and shouldn't do and which option is the most morally correct, either letting Marlena stay with her abusive husband or going behind his back and getting Marlena to cheat on him.
