He talks about “the beauty of dissonance”, which is the unwavering beauty found in unsuitable clashes or a lack of harmony. In a symbiosis of sorts, humans take what nature has to offer, in return they treat the surrounding environment with respect. He talks about embracing “Fire, Water, Earth, and Aire ”, stating these as distinct reasons for foreigners to experience the culture.
In the case of Chidester 's & Linenthal 's essay versus Sherrill 's essay, there are quite a few similarities and one important difference. In Chidester and Linenthal, they mostly discuss the politics of sacred space, and how politics play into the geography, the ownership, and the title of “sacred”. Chidester and Linenthal speak more directly to the reality of sacred space and how a site can logically take the steps in order to become one. They speak about substantial versus situational, and focus highly on the situational through politics. They also mention Van der Leeuw when explaining the politics of power, inclusion, and exclusion in terms of a sacred space.

My use of the theme of isolation through metaphor and setting in the short story “Starship” is effective because it helps reinforce the struggle of marriage and the alienation that both Jake and Abigail are experiencing. Placing the speaker in a setting that is away from her husband coherently reflects the divide and thus the isolation between the couple. “He shuts the door. […]I make my way downstairs […] and quietly step out the door into the ripening night”. The speaker’s inner hurt and isolation is matched by the quiet, post-rain night that is interrupted by the sound of a motorcycle engine.
Dicey Tillerman is a strong minded person, who has always taken care of her younger siblings, and has a rough time letting go a little of them and letting them live their own lives, at their new home with their grandmother. For instance, when her brother James, the second oldest, got a job, as Dicey had done, to help with money, she was very much against the idea and it was only that their grandmother believed it to be okay, that James was able to take the paper route job (page 37). Hence, Dicey feels that as the oldest, she should be the only one with extra responsibility. She wants to always be there for her siblings, and does not understand that they maturing and should be able to make their own choices. Additionally, when Dicey’s other
Georgia Cook 11/24/15 8C FRIES Companion or Competition? Humans are connected with one another through simple gravity-like forces that are ubiquitous and powerful, but in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the characters isolate themselves. While the english poet John Donne once said that “No man is an island”, his contemporary John Milton believed that “Solitude sometimes is best society”. So, which is true? In both books the characters act as if they are“islands”, but this does not create the “best society”.
