Throughout the years' media has had a significant impact on teens’ impressionable minds, specific events have been the invention of the television, Chubby Checker’s influence on the music industry, as well as the accusation of metal music affecting teenagers’ mental health. This paper will dissect the connections between these three events throughout the decades. These events were chosen from the song called “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel. Later there were directed commercials and many companies were running ads. Ads had an impression on the teenagers of this televisual era. Smoking ads were very common during the early 1950s and aired quite often. These ads influenced many young adults during this time to take up smoking. Not only were the ads on TV encouraging cigarettes, but smoking was also very common among the Hollywood actors of the time. Therefore the appearance of cigarettes was within the programs and the ads on television. A team of researchers did a study on cigarette consumption during the 1950s-1970s and they said “estimates suggest that television increased the share of smokers in the population by 5–15 percentage points, generating roughly 11 million additional smokers between 1946 and 1970” (“Home”). They go on to say that the biggest increase in smoking happened among Americans “between the ages of 16 and 21” (“Home”). The average human brain is not fully developed until the mid-twenties or later. This makes teenagers very impressionable. Teenagers are more impulsive because their frontal lobe is not fully developed, this can lead to them making rash decisions as well as being easily persuaded. Another part of teens that can lead them to wrong decisions is their ability to process stress. Young adults have a harder time processing stress so they use coping mechanisms. The coping mechanisms can be actually more harmful in the long run, such as smoking or vaping. This calms the mind for a little time but it can soon become an addiction and increase stress.
