Questions 1. If you had a student like Esperanza in your school, a student for whom English is a weak second language, what would you do? Given the circumstances in this situation, and a ELL program is not established I would try to create a small program or at least set side time for individual help for the students. The school has other students who are proficient in English. I would get all the student identify them and set aside at least 1 hour of the week for additional assistance. I would get a langue interpreter to see what the students are feelings. As teachers or counselors we often forget that students have thoughts feelings and needs also. By showing the students the respect by letting them vice their opinions, we can address their issues. After meeting with the students I will see what they think their needs are, and make a plan of action for those students. I would also make it mandatory for the teachers to give these students extra time on assessments and go over the information. 2. Perez made the best decision he could. I can’t say that he made a right or wrong decision because I don’t know how to evaluate student’s academic levels. I do think that he should have administrated some sort of assessment and not base the intended grade level based of her saying letters and few words. I would have honest asked to speak with the child’s parents. I know that they are working or taking care of business but I would insist that the parent come to the school with the older daughter to translate. After meeting with the parents the older sister and Esperanza we would come to a conclusion for the best grade level.
