America, the beautiful, the great, the land of opportunity, has become the land of the opportunistic. The promise of the ‘American dream’ is to some a living nightmare. America has neglected its pledge to its citizens, and it is the responsibility of Americans to ensure the promise is no longer forgotten. How to DO away with poverty? Step 1: Create a living wage. Most hard working people in America, work 40+ hours a week and can barely afford to take care of their households. Step 2: Manage wealth inequality. Today, we live in the richest country in the history of the world, but that reality means little because much of that wealth is controlled by a tiny handful of individuals. Because of the wealth inequality and disproportion of wages in this country, women are still making less than men for holding equivalent and sometimes higher positions. Education is not affordable for most and that discourages college enrollment. America spends about $80 billion to keep prisoners incarcerated each year, and President Barack Obama has stated himself that this is a misappropriation of funds. With $80 billion we could provide universal preschool for every 3-year-old and 4-year-old in America, double the salary of every high school teacher in America, finance new roads, bridges, and airports, generate job training, research and development programs, and even eliminate tuition at every one of our public colleges and universities. These unjust conditions are detrimental for our country’s well being. The Miss America Organization prides itself on its service, charity, and scholarship, but what about those who are not fortunate to have the opportunity to receive these things? I will support acts and legislation that strengthen the role of unions and the voices of working people on the job. The issue is not the America does not have the means to ensure that most of its nation is not poverty-stricken, the issue is that Americans have not made it a priority to do something about the problem.
