It was a common form of destruction for many ancient civilizations, to grow too large and become unmanageable using only pre-industrial resources. The Roman Empire was no different; having grown so large and vast that it was no longer feasible to govern the empire's provinces from Rome, Emperor Diocletian divided it into two halves, East and West. Despite the good intentions, this divide destroyed the house of cards that classical Rome stood upon. From here on out, the differences between the East and the West would decide who would survive and continue in history.
