Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg both have many messages to take away from them. One similar one is that Violence only leads to more Violence. In Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, the main conflicts are the rumbles in the stories causing many characters to feel grief and wanting vengeance. It gives the message of how if violence is used to solve problems it causes more violence to arise.
After skimming through Volume 1 of The Norton Anthology Literature by Women, I noticed the reoccurring themes of patriarchy, women subordination, and the strength to be creative despite oppression. During the times that these literary pieces were written, women were constantly battling the patriarchy in order to get basic rights. During the earlier time periods, intelligence was seen as a sign of an evil spirit in a woman, resulting in miniscule amounts of literary works written by women. Women were not provided with equal spaces to creatively express themselves, as mentioned by Virginia Woolf. Moreover, they were not given the same publishing opportunities, many women either went anonymous or by a fake male name to have their works published.
Women today, even though do have the opportunity to work, are pushed to be stay at home moms and clean while the man is the breadwinner of the home. Woman are also expected to present themselves in a certain way in society such as Paikea had to present herself as a girl and not as the future chief. Woman must carry themselves and certain way and only pursue hobbies and interests that fit what the idea of society views females doing. These are things that many women deal with and that Paikea had to deal with as well however Paikea shows that stereotypes were meant to be challenged even if it may be
The Effect of Gender on Societal Roles in The Kite Runner Throughout the history of Afghanistan, gender equality has been a major social issue. In Afghan society men carry out all important societal roles while women are marginalized. Women have lost the right to economic independence and education. Evidence of the importance of gender in Afghan society is visible in Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner.
Kalea Mitchell states, “This book is a heartening account of loss. It challenges the boundaries of gender and successfully masters to command, and represent, a multiplicity of perspectives” (goodreads). I agree with her. Trumpet by Jackie Kay challenges social views of boundary of gender and gender identity. Gloria Steinman once said, “A gender-equal society would be one where the word 'gender' does not exist: where everyone can be themselves (BrainyQuote).
More specifically, gender’s role on women and their positions in the world. Being a young woman, I fall into the intended audience of the book. The rhetoric in the book appeals to the young girls around the same age of the main character
They confide in her for the strength they need to stand up to the male leaders. This shows a big change in gender roles because previously women were too fearful to stand up to
The female characters in the novel are very strong and intelligent, and their sympathy and sense of common sense are in stark contrast with the inhuman nature of men. The women play the role of the husband and wife; become the guardian of social morality. Their compassionate nature, devout Christian faith and selfless maternal love deepen the sense of responsibility to save society. In a simple, almost all the female characters embody the Feminist salvation as wife to husband and mother to son. Women in the works have a sense of morality, sense of responsibility, resourcefulness and courage, in which they are often better than men.
“The multiple roles that women can play in a society if given the opportunity is really a tremendous asset” (Margaret Chan). Women roles are really a tremendous asset and women play a huge role in our world. Women in today's society have roles ranging from stay at home mom, business women, doctor, and fighting in the army. Women are a so strong and they should not be looked down upon. Three different movies that we watched in class display different women roles and they include, Los Olvidados, Memories of Underdevelopment, and Four Days in September.
Native American women held a great amount of power and authority in their tribes. On example of this is seen in the book Women and Religious Traditions by Leona Anderson and Pamela Young when they discuss Clanmothers. A Clanmother is described as a woman who holds “a key political office in Indigenous
The “Belly of the Whale” situation, an allusion to the biblical story of Jonah and the whale, is the hero’s near death experience and his symbolical rebirth. “The hero, instead of conquering or conciliating the power of the threshold, is swallowed into the unknown, and would appear to have died. […] the passage of the threshold is a form of self-annihilation […]. But here, instead of passing outward, beyond the confines of the visible world, the hero goes inward, to be born again” (Campbell 83-84). As soon as the hero “crosses the first threshold” and escapes the “belly of the whale” he is a changed man and his previous life is no more.
I chose this quote because this book in many ways shows female empowerment. Two examples how the book “The Whale Rider” shows female empowerment are… One example the book “The Whale Rider”, shows female empowerment is when Porourangi had another baby with his wife he met in Germany and Koro wanted Porourangi to have a son then Koro was upset that Porourangi ended up having another daughter. “Oh, be quiet,” Nanny Flowers said. “Girls can do anything these days.
With the rise of civilization also came the rise of patriarchy-based societies and the slow decline of the importance of women in society. For the longest time the history of the world has been written by men who have been the head of the patriarchy and have forgotten the role of women in history. It is important to realize that women do in fact have a place at the table with men when it comes to importance in history, and are not just the ones cooking and serving the meal. It is women who tasked with raising the next generation. By looking at women of the past, people of the future can learn and evolve to fight oppression and gain their own power.
There are many whales in the sea, but this particular whale called Moby Dick is the desirable catch for the whalers and captain due to its legendary proportions. In the novel, Moby Dick, it offers an allegorical story of humanity’s dangerous search for meaning. The monstrous, white whale represents that “meaning” humans have been hunting for their entire lives, but at the end one will discover that one can do so much but still end up not finding their answer. The entire plot to Moby Dick is directed towards the final confrontation between Ahab, his crewman and the White whale. At the end, the whale wins the fight and the rest of the crew on ship all die, demonstrating the fact that the whale cannot be defeated, hence signaling how the laws
WHALE RIDER The film ‘whale rider; was directed by Niki Caro. The story is a representation of the importance of tradition and ancestry. Symbolism is used in this film to help to show the importance of the community they live in and the elders and ancestors that have helped to build and structure their religion and the people that live within the community. The symbols that will best represent the importance of the film are the whale tooth, the bike and the windows.
