Geoffrey Canada practices Directive Leadership Behaviour. According to an interview conducted by Jennifer Guerra, Geoffrey Canada believes in providing his volunteers with specific tasks and instructions.
During the interview, Canada mentioned that adopting a collaborative approach is an erroneous move for non-profit organisations as they prioritize their goals more than making profits. As such, volunteers tend to be less motivated to work hard without a monetary incentive.

Legitimate Power is when a leader is given special authority to be in his position. His job title gives him the right to give orders to his employees.
Schultz also possesses Referent Power and thus, commands great respect within Starbucks. A leader has Referent Power if followers believe that the leader has characteristics that are desirable and should be emulated.
An article by Michelle Stallard mentioned that Schultz gained respect when he showed great courage and compassion for his employees. Schultz received news that three of his employees were shot dead in a Starbucks outlet and immediately rushed down to their homes to grief their loss.

Suggestion for Improvement: Schultz could exercise reward power over his employees by more control over the distribution of Starbucks shares, staff promotion and wages. Employees would see Schultz as a leader with great reward power.
