Hockey and maple syrup are two of the most important Indigenous inventions and have changed greatly since their original innovations. They are both important Canadian symbols and show how impactful Indigenous people and their inventions are to Canada’s culture. They also significantly benefit Canada’s economy. Maple syrup and hockey highlight the advancements in technology for both sports and food preparation. Hockey started as a game of stickball. It was originally called Shinny. Shinny was mostly played by women. The sport's original name, "shinny," may have been misnamed by European settlers because of its resemblance to the Scottish hockey game “shinty”. The following day, the sap in the tree was warmed by the sun, and delicious syrup was poured from the hole. First Nations tribes have been collecting syrup from maple trees and boiling it open over fires to make maple syrup since then. The syrup collection was very simple and basic, which took a long time. To direct the flow of the syrup into the container below, some carved a V-shape into the bark, while others drilled a hole and installed a spout, or spile, made of basswood or willow tubes. After the sap was gathered, it was allowed to naturally separate into lighter water and heavier sugar syrup by being left outside in the cold. These days, a complex network of pipes attached to the trees immediately collects maple sap and transports it to the sugar shack. Reverse osmosis partial concentration devices enable many maple syrup producers to raise the sap's sugar content and shorten its boiling time. Maple syrup is now heavily regulated by quality control, unlike the original making of maple syrup by the First Nations people, which wasn’t. Maple syrup has transformed significantly from its basic collection tactics to its modern and complex
