On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated making Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson the new president. He was now the 36th president of the United States of America. Johnson was the fourth vice-president who came to office after the former president was killed. Lyndon B. Johnson officially had a full term after what he called “a landslide victory” he overwhelmingly defeated Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona. He achieved many accomplishments such as gaining comrades, spreading words about peace, and giving education a higher budget.
Lyndon B. Johnson took a firm command on the government making the worried world feel calmer about the United States policy and leadership. He promised his time in office will bring world peace and a “peaceful revolution” which would forever take away hunger, poverty, and disease. He quickly started to gain support for the businessmen while having his party’s traditionally friendly ties with organized labor. In his State of the Union message to Congress, Johnson declared for increased spending on education, health, and training for the military. Supported by the previous president, the measure had been introduced into Congress in 1963 before Kennedy died. When Johnson went into office, he supported the bill. The bill ended segregation in public places and banned discrimination in the workplace. He banned the discrimination of race, color, religion, national origin, and gender. The billed passed the House of Representatives in February, but the Southern parts of the United States blocked the bill from being passed.
