From Hollywood actor to the 40th President of the United states, Ronald Reagan lived an interesting life. He fulfilled his campaign promise to restore “the great confident roar of American progress and growth and optimism” and survived an assassination attempt. He was born in America, on February 6, 1911. He was only 69 days into his presidency when a man named John Hinckley attempted to assassinate him only to injure the president and two Secret Service men. He brought a fresh optimism and restored hope to the United States.

He waited until the Republican National Convention in Miami to publicize his candidacy. He ended up supporting Richard Nixon. An out break of protesting started at the University of California at Berkeley causing governor Reagan to send in the National guard to break it up. The outbreak started because university officials blocked activists’ efforts to create a “People’s Park”. This was in 1969. The next year Reagan was re-elected as the governor of California. His term ended in 1974. For a few months after his gubernatorial period ended, Reagan wrote syndicated newspaper columns and provided commentaries on radio stations across the world. One year later, on November 20, Reagan announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president. In 1976, he lost the Republican Party's nomination to Gerald Ford. He made a great performance providing for his election in 1980. On November 13, 1979, Reagan again announced his candidacy for president. This time he won! He then chose George Bush as his running mate. Their statement of party policies called for "a new consensus with all those across the land who share a community of values embodied in these words: family, work, neighborhood, peace, and freedom." He was speaking at a hotel in Washington. After the meeting was over, he was leaving the building when a mentally disturbed person by the name of John Hinckley Jr. made an assassination attempt. Hinckley shot four people total. One was Reagan’s press secretary, James Brady who was shot in the head after using his body as a shield for Reagan. Reagan was also shot and then was shoved in to a car seconds after. He thought the man who pushed him into the car had broke some of his ribs. They soon found out that he had been shot. He was rushed to the hospital where they did an x-ray and found out that he had a bullet in one of his lungs less than an inch away from his heart. He was immediately underwent surgery. Ronald Reagan made a full recovery after surgery. The man who shot him was found and charged, but was not found guilty because he was literally crazy. Brady didn’t fare so well, suffering major brain damage for the rest of his
