James Madison, a Democratic-Republican and Vice-President to Thomas Jefferson, was the fourth President of the United States from 1809 to 1817. Madison is also known as the Father of the Constitution due to his crucial role in the writing of both the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Madison had many accomplishments in his lifetime, however, he faced many problems during his Presidential terms. Some of these problems included the War of 1812 with Great Britain, the stop of trade between the U.S. and Europe, and New England threatened to secede from the Union. Despite these problems, Madison successfully completed his two terms of Presidency before retiring to his plantation estate, Montpelier, where he died in 1836.

This problem had been caused by the Embargo act that had been passed during Jefferson’s Presidency. The Embargo act prohibited all trade between Europe and the United States. This caused a serious problem for the United States as it caused the economy to decline as the United States wasn’t exporting nor goods which was a main source of income for the United States. When Jefferson was leaving office, he ended the Embargo which was supposed to increase the American economy. However, both England and France continuously attacked American ships which was causing not only a loss of goods but also, the economy was still suffering from these attacks. Madison had to find a way to deal with this issue so he passed the Non- Intercourse Act which prohibited trade with both France and Great Britain unless one of the two lifted the restrictions they had on the United States. When France hinted that they were going to list the restrictions, America simply restricted trade against just Britain. However, France had lied about lifting the restrictions which didn’t resolve the issues that Madison had been having with the two countries.
