The United States and the Soviet union had wished for a friendship between their two countries. However, due to having incompatible economic and political systems, they had many problems building toward each other over events that happened in the past. This resentment and tension increased to become the “ Cold War”. Three events that happened during the Cold War were: the Korean War, the Berlin Airlift and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Korean War was one of the major events that happened in the Cold War. On Jun 25, 1950, North Korea too 135 thousand men and invaded South Korea, starting the Korean War. When the South Korean capital fell three days later, President Harry S. Truman, who was supported by the United Nations, ordered U.S. sea and air forces to support and give cover to the Koreans. The war lasted 3 years; hundreds of thousands of Koreans lost their lives, and over 35,000 Americans died as well. The intervention of the United States led to an indecisive stalemate. Military forces of France, Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States divided and occupied Berlin after World War II. However, the Soviets had wanted all of Berlin for themselves. In June of 1948, they closed all highways, railroads and canals that were connected with the three other zones. The Russians believed that this method would force the U.S, British and French forces to surrender all of their control. Contrary to the Russians beliefs and wishes, President Harry Truman and his allies decided to provide their sector from the air and set up the “Berlin Airlift”. The Berlin Airlift was a never ending supply of medical supplies, drinks and food. This was another great decision President Truman made.
