The story of Lynn Spradley’s journey is for every parent who believes that their child isn’t normal. I learned a great deal about what it truly means to be deaf from this book. Reading this story brought out much emotion as the story progressed. Lynn’s parents Tom and Louise reaction of every parent’s worst thought when having a child. Everyone believes that there child is going to be healthy and fully functioning ready to be a part of the world.
Unbroken, a novel written by Laura Hillenbrand, outlines the horrors of being captured by Japanese troops during the Second World War. Because of the ethics that the Japanese people had, the Geneva Convention was hardly ever followed, and the captives were rarely ever treated well. The Red Cross was blatantly lied to, meaning that to the outside world, the Japanese Prison Camps were treating their husbands and sons well. On the interior, however, it was apparent that the prisoners had to do whatever it would take to survive. Men stole goods, communicated in many ways, and even had ploys to either kill camp officials, or to even run away.
What is the definition of the word courage? Does a courageous person fight a hard battle, or do they stay strong mentally even when they know they might not succeed in the end. In the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the theme she weaves throughout the book is that courage is when you push through something even though you know that you might not succeed in the end. In the book, Lee does a great job of supporting her theme with many dynamic characters who have many courageous qualities. Mrs. Dubose, Miss Maudie, and Atticus all have courageous characteristics that are described in the book.

Growing up in a small-town I was literally in a culture bubble. There were almost no deaf people. I just never had the opportunity to converse with someone who is deaf. As I was reading this book I noticed my internal motivation for learning ASL was changing. I now want to learn as much ASL as I possibly can, so I can chat with those I come in contact with that are deaf or hard of hearing.

Sign language is a course that many schools do not offer as an elective or a foreign language credit. The assistant principal of Seton High School, Susan Hollenbach, explained that many smaller and private schools are not able to offer Sign Language as a course because they are unable to find the staffing and resources for the class. School size and student interest is a big factor in deciding what courses will be created because all the electives and languages are student-driven. This means that if more students show interest in taking ASL courses, it is more possible for it to become a class. Also, the administration has to decide whether or not the certain course will take away from other classes and possibly diminish the class size of another class which
Nonetheless, students should identify which few methods enhance their memory and understanding best when learning, as different students have different learning needs. Likewise, students, who are usually required to recall learning materials, are recommended to view future new materials with strong enthusiasm and determination (Shuilleabhain, 2014), as it is an approach to motivate students. However, students should take care not to practice learning techniques they are not familiar with, especially when nearing the exams; as students who, Lan (cited in Bednall and Kehoe, 2011, pp. 205-226) believes, “engage in unfamiliar strategies may induce a high working memory load, thereby diminishing the effectiveness of their study efforts.” Also, both teachers and parents alike should take the practical and relevant steps in ensuring that their students/children are well schooled in the manner of implementing effective learning techniques in their academic life.
It is my goal to make sure students are not just memorizing facts, but are actually understanding. They should be able to take the lesson and apply it to other areas of their lives. I believe students need to be assessed frequently and routinely. The students need accurate and effective feedback, so they can make any necessary adjustments.
