What Are The Levels Of O2 And Co2 To Maintain Acid-Base Balance

248 Words1 Pages
Lungs:
The lungs use the levels of O2 and CO2 to help maintain the acid-base balance in the body. The lungs remove CO2, which effects the blood pH. As CO2 increases, it reacts with H2O to form H+ and bicarbonate ions. CO2, which is mildly acidic, is a waste product from processing oxygen and nutrient, which all cells need. This means that CO2 is constantly produced by the cells in the body.
Kidneys:
The kidneys adjust the blood pH in longer-term adjustments of hours to days by using a variety of mechanisms. These mechanisms excrete or retain H+, bicarbonates, and other ions. The kidneys role is to buffer the metabolic acids that are found in the human blood. The HCO3- required to buffer these metabolic acids are filtered out of the blood
