Garfield middle school is an urban/ suburban school. Schools say they are urban because they contain African Americans and that’s the nicest way they can label the school. The literacy scores of the school are low because the school contains 65 percent Latinos. There are about 1000 students from 6th grade to 8th grade in the school. The secret of the school that I felt that the principal and other workers within that district is that anyone could walk in and be a substitute even though they made us feel that the teachers need to have a real connection and care for the job to be hired. That is dangerous to keep around students in an education environment and the process in which substitutes are hired should depend on a vigorous test and not because they lack teachers. School systems all face this problem of not having enough time to prepare and bring anyone who answers their cry for help for a substitute even if they are not capable or experienced enough.
The challenges that the school faces is H.W and the students not knowing how to do it. The parents cannot help because most of them are first generation Latinos or are always working and don't have the time to teach their children. The

The children have a curriculum about drugs and alcohol. There is one ESL class for every grade level and the students are put in the lowest level and can make their way up depending on how fast they learn. The computer classes keep up to date with todays technology which is an everyday class. The school rewards the children who are smarter by putting them in an honors media class which teaches g them advanced material which readies them for the future. The students were being taught material which is taught in high school and the smart boards (technology) is cutting down on the times needed for the students to learn the material which makes them learn more
