Abstracts and the Misunderstandings Behind the Writer and Reader
Test anxiety is a psychological disease that tends to be debated about in terms of a cure. The disease itself is defined as a fear of failing before taking an exam that prevents one from preforming as well as possible. Test anxiety itself can change lives, due to the increasing number of important tests students are being required to take. All disease and sickness is cured through many different people working in order to find a solution. A complex abstract can lead to confusion about what the paper is about and why it is written. The purpose of an abstract is to summarize an article to inform the reader what it is about. A common theme scene throughout scientific abstracts is the structure. Scientific abstracts pertaining to test anxiety allow its users to gather information regarding the topic of the paper, research methods, and findings from the study. Every abstract contains one paragraph and uses a formal font. The begging tends to start with a sentence that pertains to the topic of the paper. This sentence is usually very broad and explains the topic or purpose and sometimes involves a research question. This is to introduce the reader to what they will be reading about. The next couple of sentences describe the research methods used and may also include the type of data analysis the researcher used. This acknowledges to what kind of research was done and how is was carried out. The remaining four or so sentences describe the results of the study and contain the authors conclusions and recommendations. The reason to put the findings in the abstract is to intrigue the reader enough to make the decision of reading the paper. With society continuing to become more technologically advanced, people are checking out books less and less. Why check out a book when you can just read it online? This is the question many people ask themselves when trying to find the book they need or want. The web allows people to access books and scientific papers easier. As this happens one can see that abstracts are also continuing to shift onto the web. With more access to scientific papers on the web people have more choices when it comes to which one to read. This means that the abstract is that much more important now. When deciding whether or not to read a scientific paper people use the abstract to see what the paper is about. This increase in use of internet papers means people will be less patient with poorly written abstracts and more interested in reading a paper that has no errors. The success in this genre can be measured by how many people read the paper itself. The readers themselves tend to measure whether an abstract is good. If the abstract is done unsuccessfully journal article or paper will not ever be viewed. As a whole the entire science community values integrity and collaboration. This is reflected in the genre of abstracts because without integrity in the abstract, trust would be lost between the reader and the writer and that entails loss of
