Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great created two of the biggest empires ever. They were both very successful rulers. Genghis Khan was the leader of the Mongol Army and was responsible for 40 million deaths which was 5% of the global population at the time. He also created the largest contiguous empire ever. Alexander was the leader of the Macedonian empire and never lost a battle. Even though they have some similarities, they ended up being very different rulers. The main reason they are different is their childhood. Genghis Khan’s childhood led to him becoming a superior ruler to Alexander the Great. Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great had very different upbringings. Genghis Khan’s upbringing was very harsh. While, Alexander had an unchallenging upbringing. As a child, Genghis Khan was “Raised in the harshest conditions on the Asian steppes, he knew hunger, kidnapping, violence, and slavery” (Brophy 48). They both accomplished a lot. “Genghis Khan’s conquests include 30 countries” (Brophy 49). With these conquests “He created and strengthened trade and diplomatic links between China, India, Europe, and the Middle East, opened roads along the Silk Route, and organized a large free-trade zone” (Brophy 49). This led to Asia becoming more powerful because the trade made each country more wealthy. Alexander also conquered many countries. He “Conquered the Persian Empire; Including Anatolia, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Egypt; and expanded Greek rule all the way to India” (Brophy 48). He had become “One of history’s greatest military minds who—as King of Macedonia and Persia—established the largest empire the ancient world had ever seen” (History.com Staff). Even though he did create a very large empire it wasn’t nearly as big as Genghis Khan’s empire.
