Cesar Chavez and Harriet Tubman are both very successful people who fought for people’s rights and succeeded. The poem “Elegy on the Death of Cesar Chavez” by Rudolfo Anaya is about how Cesar Chavez who had fought for migrant farm workers’ rights in America is being eulogized by Rudolfo Anaya and what Mr. Anaya portrays in this poem is how much he is missed. Harriet Tubman’s biography “Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad” by Ann Petry is about the things she was taught as a child and the skills she developed. Both of these people helped other individuals and they reached their goal. Although, Cesar Chavez made a larger impact on the world we live in.

Anthony is considered by some as the founding mother of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States. Her goal: men and women treated equally under the eyes of the law and society. The 19th Amendment in 1920 would be the culmination event for this movement, but the winds of change began blowing in 1848.
From the six civil rights leaders, I chose Betty Friedan and Stokely Carmichael. Friedan was a feminist that believed in the right of people to decide their sex. Carmichael was a prominent organizer that wanted to build a new society where whites moved away from racism and begin to focus on other problems in the U.S. such as education, economy, and political issues. I chose them because I wanted to research on minority groups and leaders. Everyone knows the famous leaders MLK and Malcolm X. Similar to the Battle at Gettysburg, everyone knows about the Pickett's Charge but not the other battle that took place.
Rosa Parks from “Rosa Parks, My Story” and Jackie Robinson from “I Never Had It Made” are similar and different in how they responded when they had no instructions when dealing with racism. Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born January 31st, 1919. He was the first African American Baseball player to play in major league baseball, this put him in a situation of racism and bigotry with no instructions. Rosa Louise Mccauley Parks was born February 4th, 1913. She was known as “The first lady of civil rights” and “The mother of the freedom movement”
She was born Isabella Baumfree in Swaterkill, NY around 1797 in Ulster County. She was one of twelve children born to James and Elizabeth (Betsey) Baumfree. Her father was from, what is now known as modern day Ghana and her mother was the daughter of slaves from Guinea was known as Mau-Mau Bet. The Baumfrees were owned by Colonel Hardenburgh and lived at the Colonel’s estate in Esopus, NY, which was located about 95 miles from New York City. When the Colonel passed away, the Baumfrees were passed down to his son, Charles in 1806.

Both movements had many similarities and differences and have affected socially and politically the United States .
The Black power movement was more than just a raised fist. It was an influential movement established in the 1960s, and began to slow down in the 70s, it promoted self-sufficiency among the black and African community, and they fought for equality and power among those who faced discrimination in society. The Progressive Movement was an effort to cure the many ailments that plagued American society. The frontier had been tamed, great cities and businesses developed, and territories across the globe had been conquered, but not all citizens shared in this new found wealth, prestige, and optimism. With the great spurt of industrial growth in the last quarter of the 19th century, agriculture was not the great driving force it once was for the American economy. This alienated a vast majority of the midwestern towns, which could include Spoon River, whose livelihood would have likely been depended on the cultivation of crops. In an attempt to try and recapture the pureness of simpler times many turned to religion.
There appear to be a few similarities between the occupy wall street, and marxism. They both in their own ways criticise capitalism and lean toward a more socialist government. They both Criticise capitalism but are not necessarily Anti-capitalism, Marxist believed that capitalism set the foundation for a socialist economy; while the occupy movement is mostly against corruption in wall street and its politics. Marx Believed that this socialist economy is only possible when the working class notices it has or is being exploited then makes changes based off this. An important resemblance is their idea of Class conflict, both believe that capitalism brings a deep division between classes, brought by economic greed.

The feminist movement and the gay rights movement are two communities that have been fighting for their rights for a long time and are similar in many ways, yet different in many others. While they are both social movements, the feminist movement’s main focus is on women’s rights, while the gay rights movement’s main focus is on gay rights. Similar to each other or not, the two movements could (and do) benefit from each other. Both women and gay people have faced discrimination due to being seen as lesser in the eyes of society. However, the reasons for this discrimination they face/have faced are very different.
