Essay 1.2 In the beginning, something created the heavens and the earth, as every creation story starts. Even Hesiod had the same concept, along with the book of Genesis. Although both of the works came from different cultures, they have the same idea and some of the same values. They both represent the idea of obedience, violence and, family loyalty. Each creation story has its own way of being told, but almost all of the stories uphold the same values. The book of Genesis is the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. It is an account of the creation of the world, the early history of humanity and the origins of Israel’s ancestors. Genesis mainly focuses on the idea of obedience, with mentions of violence and, the importance of family loyalty. This book tells the story of God creating everything. For example, God spoke light into existence, along with animals, plants and, even humankind. Creating humanity was the culmination of his creation. He wanted someone to help take care of his beautiful creation, but consequences came with that action. First, he created Adam, a man made from dust, and Eve came next, being born from Adam’s rib. The fifth commandment of the Old Testament even states, “Honor your father and your mother.” Actions have consequences, sometimes severe ones as this story shows, but it’s also important to be respectful to those who provide and take care of us.
