In John Schoen’s “Why does College cost so much?”, he unpacks many ideas on the topic of tuition. In the reading, he uses Harvard, the school that raised tuition a substantial amount in 1971, as an example. The university justified the increase in tuition on rising inflation, which the article continued to state that tuition and inflation were not synonymous. Presently, Harvard charges roughly $45,000 a semester. If inflation were the reason for raising tuition cost, then students would only be paying an estimated amount of $15,000 a semester according to research and inflation models.
Inflation is the most evident cause for cost increases, but other factors play into it as well. Technology has extensively advanced, which is addressed in the article. This has caused both schools and students to spend more money on technological resources and raises student tuitions to cover the schools costs. Debt also results from this, as colleges will often purchase more technology than tuition covers. The need for a college education has affected tuition as well.

A few decades ago in America, the baby boomer generation paid for college with the minimum wage salary they made from their summer jobs. Student loans are then causing debt, that later affects a students’ life in numerous ways. College students today, tend to lean towards nicer looking colleges, rather than a higher education.
Colleges are charging students fees for things that they may never see, and it is causing those future students to begin to see college as unnecessary. It becomes less of a individual issue and more of a public issue because of the immense amount of people that are affected by it. Using the sociological imagination concept helps us see the world from a different perspective.
