These fragments have been harder to read since, the use of words, the logic and sequence of events were not as organized as in Poetics. Personally, the origin and the lineages of the Greek gods is not as interesting and significant as Aristotle’s literature. The Theogony centers on these Greek traditions of assigning gods to explain the unknown and nature phenomena. There’s nothing wrong with it since they didn’t have the resources as we do today in order to understand and explain most of the events of today’s world. There are many ways in which society can go back and analyze past events in order to improve the future, I just don’t see the point of going back and analyze how the origin of Greek gods can improve our society and well-being.
In the years before Christ the Greeks said there were multiple gods and they also had heroes who weren't quite gods but they were greater than humans. These heroes had to have certain qualities to be considered as one. These qualities are similar but different than those qualities of today's heroes. The greek's qualities consisted of cleverness, courage, strength, a noble birth, must have a companion or guide, they go on a journey or quest or have a goal, they meet dangers, they often face temptation and loneliness, and go to a dark place. They must also have a flaw, like acting without thinking or become angry easily.
In Theogony the first gods were chaos, and gaia (earth). They produces night and day. And from night and day came many other gods. The God in Genesis is omnipotent. In Theogony we have Zeus at the head of the hierarchy but, he needs assistance to do things and other gods can interfere with him.
The Ancient Greeks strongly believed in the power of the gods, and this was violating the law of the higher
Even though the Greeks were known for their religious values, but also had other important events that took place as well like the Prometheus – Pandora story. The Greeks at this time period was wondering why the Gods Were giving them so much hell, which my assumption would be that the Greeks kept taking stuff from the God, but I could be wrong, but most likely it would be true. Prometheus ended up taking Zeus fire, which lead to Zeus stating that on (page 35) that “Prometheus and the men in the future will suffer a great pain”. To me this could make since that the Gods gave them Greeks so much trouble because of situations like this.
It is surprising how many characteristics these completely unrelated gods had in common and how many they didn’t. Comparing them, their territory,
History does repeat itself. For instance, discrimination will always occur. Just because slavery stopped, does not mean forms of it will stop also. People are still negative towards people with different skin colors than them. Skin color is really deep for some people.
Religion plays a large part in the Odyssey. The people looked to the gods for everything. It was believed that the gods controlled everything and could destroy the life or afterlife if they did anything wrong. The gods that were looked up to were Greek gods, not our God in Heaven. The gods function more as spiritual guides and supporters for their human subjects.
Both Cultures had many different Gods that they prayed to. More specifically, the Greeks had Gods and Goddesses were people from the Han Dynasty had many different religions since there was a variety of Gods to worship. Still, both made sacrifices to their Gods, had to pray to their Gods when making decisions, and asked their Gods to take care of them in their lives and afterlives. Although, these were not the only things that Han and Greece had in common. In their governments, they had mutual views about who could and couldn't be a part of the regime.
The gods of all civilizations expected its people to serve them. For example the covenant between the Hebrew people and their god. Good and evil and be explained by the polytheistic and monotheistic nature of the civilizations. In being polytheistic the Greek and Mesopotamians had good and evil gods, which explained the good and evil in the world. Hebrews, being Monotheistic, had only one god.
The Resemblance of Gods and Humans Throughout all religions, gods have always been seen as superior in every way possible. The division between humans and gods has always been prevalent and prominent. However, when the actions and motives of these gods are truly analyzed, it will become evident that the gods of Greek Mythology merely behave as humans with supernatural powers.
In the epic poem The Odyssey, Homer portrays Greek gods and goddesses as possessing human qualities and faults. Through their actions and emotions, Homer emphasizes the detrimental effects of lust, envy, wrath, and greed in ancient Grecian society. He also never fails to remind readers of the importance of respect for holy figures because of their powerful abilities to create chaos and wonder". Homer wants to prove that gods and humans share a variety of traits, and the only difference is that god don’t allow these flaws negatively to impact their society. To help further his argument, we can compare Greek gods and goddesses to that of Christianity.
The relationships between the Greek gods and mortals have always been complicated. The gods can be generous and supportive, but also harsh and destructive towards the humans. They claim to be all powerful beings with unlimited power and influence, but in truth, they are far more human than they are perceived. They meddle with human lives, not because they are wise, but because of their own selfish reasons. In Homer’s
This can make life difficult for humans as the gods tend to believe they are to be worshipped by all, but merely worshipping them does not give their divine aid or protection and should you scorn them you would face their wrath.
To them, there was a higher plane of existence that was beyond the physical world around them. Because of their differences in beliefs, India and Greece had opposing philosophies on which they based their governments, their religions, and their overall societies and social structures. Ancient Greece and India
