The internal world of the image What do you see within the image? Comment on the cultural or historical context if appropriate. What is happening? Who is doing what? How do the children interact with each other and with adults? Comment on how the image is arranged by the artist (light and dark, foreground and background etc) The two children in the image seem like they are from the 1970s/80s era, with the way they are dressed, and the picture containing no colour. This could be symbolic however, as this could be a modern day image but made to look older to create a point. This point could be the significance the time had on children, and the values they will carry throughout life. The children are acting as ‘parents’ in the image, which is shown by their prams, and toys as their ‘children’. The image could be reflecting the discourse of the innocence of children, shown by them ‘pretending’ to be parents as part of a game. This image could also go against childhood innocence, as Warner (1994) states that children are expected to have no experiences or knowledge of the adult world. But these children clearly do as they are reflecting an adult role. There is a tension between innocence and experience however, with their blatant use of cigarettes.
