What Does Fire Symbolize In Frankenstein

In the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, there are many powerful symbols, but I chose light and fire. Light symbolizes discovery, knowledge, and enlightenment. The goal of a scientist is to reach the light and that was initially Victor’s goal. With light comes darkness and this would be fire. Fire is dangerous and more powerful enemy of light. Victor’s journey and desire to create life leads him down the road of fire and destruction. From a young age Victor loved alchemy and natural philosophy. When Victor is seventeen he goes to college in Ingolstadt. There he meets with Krempe a professor who tells Victor that he wasted his time studying alchemy and natural philosophy. Victor then starts to study science, over the years of studying he is fascinated by life and tries to go one step further and discover the secret of it. However, Victor gets scared by this creature and runs away leaving the creature alone in his apartment. The creature leaves the apartment and searches in the wilderness for food and shelter. He goes into a hut, then a village and scares people because he is hideous. In the book the creature says, “ I thought (foolish wretch!) that it might be in my power to restore happiness to these deserving people.” (80-81) He thinks that the people are deserving and he would ruin it because they would think he is hideous. The creature does not have much hope in himself anymore. Later the creature decides to meet the DeLacey's father who is blind and the man is nice to the creature but the family runs him out. This makes the monster confused and mad that no one in the family will give him a chance. The creature destroys the DeLacey's house because he realizes that no one will accept him and he thought that the family was going to bring him
