How would you feel if a place with people was all equal? In the story called “Harrison Bergeron” everyone is equal, but this type of equality might be bad. The author of this story is Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. For example, if you are smart, the government might give you an ear-piece which makes a buzzing sound whenever you have an idea. That buzzing sound makes you forget your idea. This story has both mental and physical handicaps, but some of the handicaps were very bizarre. The first handicap is the earpiece that makes you forget ideas. That handicap is probably one of the worse handicaps among most of them because if you are smart you can forget your great ideas within seconds. Like George in the story, when he was thinking why the ballerinas had to wear masks since they were so beautiful, he forgot what he was thinking about because he has the earpiece. Since the government did not want Harrison to have ideas of overthrowing the government, the Handicapper General gave him headphones to wear which made him forget his ideas and the headphones also gave him headaches. This handicap takes out lots of energy from people, but later on you get used to it. For example, in the story Hazel asks George if he needed to rest on carrying the bag of bird shots, but George said that he was fine because he said that it seems to be like the bag has become part of his body. Carrying a bag of bird shots must be very heavy in the beginning ,but once you get used to carrying it must feel like carrying nothing.
