Looking for a Deeper Meaning in Emily Dickinson’s Poetry Born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts (“A Timeline”), Emily Dickinson is a classic, female American poet most people are familiar with nowadays. However, if her name or works are unknown to some, they are missing out on poetry with a unique style and the ability to touch readers’ hearts by addressing themes about human nature. Since she was a keen observer of Amherst life, nature, and human passion (Byers and Bourgoin 541), it was easy for her to write about said themes. Overall, Dickinson lived a life of reclusion, intense writing, and continuous mourning (“Emily Dickinson: The Later Years”). One might even say that Dickinson used literature to cope with her feelings through harsh times. Because of this, she was able to create pieces highly influenced by her life; she created pieces that are genuine and will keep being appreciated over time, as proven by her poems “I Measure Every Grief I Meet” and “Because I Could Not Stop for Death.” After breaking these poems down, people should be convinced of Dickinson’s talent and authenticity. However, if there they consider there is still room for doubt, why do they not try reading the rest of her works?
