Money Guides Society In the book The Great Gatsby by Scott F. Fitzgerald, the fact that money is a huge necessity in society for status, respect, and friends makes James Gatz create and entirely new identity to meet these requirements. Having the money isn't enough, Gatsby continuously flaunts his wealth to meet society's belief that money is required to be a respected member of society. In the first couple chater Gatsby is always throwing elaborate parties to show his wealth and at one of the parties, by “seven o’clock the orchestra has arrived, no thin five piece affair, but a whole pit full of oboes and trombones and saxophones and viols and cornets and piccolos and low and high drums” (Fitzgerald 40). He wants to have the highest social status and respect from people that he can get which is why he gets and orchestra to make people think he is very rich. Also the repetition of the word “and” shows he has many things and possessions which shows he has a lot of money. He does all of this so he has a high social status and is more respected so more people come to his parties. Nick and Gatsby were going to go out to lunch and gatsby was driving so “Gatsby's gorgeous car lurched up the rocky drive to [Nick’s] door and gave out a burst melody from its three-noted horn”(Fitzgerald 63). The word “gorgeous” has a positive connotation and denotes beauty which is exactly what Gatsby wasn't people to think of him as. Also, “three-noted hron” could also have and up beat, positive connotation. This would fit the personality of Gatsby perfectly because a three-noted horn is something loud that everyone can hear, and once they look to see the noise they will see Gatsby’s beautiful car. As Gatsby was reminiscing about his past he mentioned that “his parents were shiftless farm people - his imagination never really accepted them as his parents at all”(Fitzgerald). Both of the words “shiftless and unsuccessful” have negative connotations and struck fear into the heart of Gatsby. He wanted to be the complete opposite of his parents because he knew that with no money they could never be very respected. He has to break away from his parents in order for him to have success. Another important word used is “imagination”. This is the most positive word in the quote because imagination denotes something that isn't real but he wants to make his dreams a reality and this is much more positive than living a poor farm life. It really emphasizes the fact he wanted to start a whole new life of success that he had already made in his own imagination. Again talking to Nick about his past, Gatsby said that “he had changed [his name] at the age of seventeen and the specific moment that he witnessed the beginning of his career - when he saw Dan Cody’s yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on lake superior”(Fitzgerald 98). Both the words “changed” and “beginning” can give a positive connotation because it can mean something new and good is starting. In this case, this is the start of Gatsby's new, and better life. Another phrased used is “insidious flat”. The word insidious
