Indigenous groups, and their relationships to the land and the environment, are connected deeply to the core. Land and environment is a part of their identity, and is rooted in their culture and history. Innu tribe, which sometimes are called Montagnais, or Naskapi, are aboriginal peoples, who are located in areas of Quebec and Labrador. Montagnais, which is translated in French as mountain people. It relates to the people who live in forested, more southern communities.

The Indigenous Peoples Day Symposium was a panel presentation by four main speakers who identify as Indigenous Peoples. The presentation began with singing and honoring them. After this concluded, the first speaker, Chebon Kernell, gave his speech about Indigenous Peoples. Kernell’s was the most engaging in my opinion because he talked about how “a long time ago they were here” and their footprints were made right here on the TCU campus. He shared his own personal experience, beginning with when he witnessed that he was being taught, “this is how it was supposed to be, God’s will.”

They are sometimes also thought of as more primitive religions. The fundamental principles that define a living religion are compatible with a modern society that is dynamic, and can be seen in practice today. Each of the living religions explored in the articles have different beliefs and ethics, which contribute immensely to each individual, providing a sense of self identity and belonging, along with a moral code and answers to questions that are otherwise unexplainable. In Durkheim’s “Elementary forms of Religious life”, he studies the aborigines in Australia in order to understand the simplest form of religion. In studying their form of religion, he finds that a religion at its most basic forms needs three basic components satisfied: an idea of the sacred and profane, a set of rites and rituals, and a moral community.
