In the movie and play A Christmas Carol Ebeneezer Scrooge discovers how his actions now could affect the afterlife. Both of these formats have many similarities, like how all the ghosts of Christmas are described and seen in the same way. Both have the Ghost of Christmas Past very bright, a woman, and held holly. The Ghost of Christmas Present is wearing a large green robe, very tall and mighty figure, and wears a beard. The Ghost of Christmas Future is black, frightening, and has bony fingers.
An example of indirect characterization in A Christmas Carol is when the clerk asked Scrooge if he could take a day off from work and Scrooge replies by saying, “ ‘A poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth of December!’ ” We learn many things about Scrooge in this passage, the first thing we learn is that Scrooge hates Christmas. As mentioned, Scrooge thinks that Christmas robs money from people. We also learn that Scrooge doesn't treat his employees well, we know this from the tone of his voice. In the play, “The Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge was very rude throughout ¾ of the story. Towards the end he brightened up for once and was very nice surprisingly. Everyone saw him as an ungrateful and grumpy man who had no Christmas spirit whatsoever. Everyone else was up to the spirit and so excited and he always was rude and miserable and made it roll off of some others.
He does this as a representation of people. Fear of embarrassment or rejection keeps us as people from expressing our feelings and views of the world and God, the “divine idea” of which we as people of the world represent brings us to shame.
The book and movie version of the story, “A Christmas Carol” are alike, but they are also very different. There are more similarities than there are differences. At the beginning of the novel “A Christmas carol” Scrooge can be interpreted as an archetypal villain (an extreme stereotype of a villain), this is inferred when Dickens describes Scrooge as an “old sinner”. The quote “old sinner” links in with the description of a villain as a sinner often someone who commits immoral acts regularly whilst disregarding Christian doctrine, considering the time the book was published (1800) committing a sin was a villainous act to do; therefore implying to the reader that Scrooge is a going to be a villainous character throughout the novel. The ghost brought him tomany different places throughout the night, with his first stop being two families that show different feelings after finding out that Scrooge has passed away. The first place they visit is a family who is very poor and owes Scrooge money. As they find out that Scrooge has died, they are very happy, because they have a child to raise, and they don’t have any spare money. The ghost also brings Scrooge to Bob Cratchit's house, who is his employee.
