What Does Tom Robinson Mean In To Kill A Mockingbird
Tom is a man of character who stated that he often helped Mayella Ewell. He went out of his way for others but was a victim of of racism and was characterized by what the people in Maycomb said and thought of him Tom Robinson passed by Mayella’s house everyday to and from Mr. Link Deas field. He stopped and she spoke to him as a civilized person
In our class we have been reading the book "To Kill a Mockingbird." In the story a character named Atticus says a quote, "shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit' em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" (119). A character that shows a similarity with this quote is Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is an African American who works in Alabama, and he is being accused of rapng a white women named Mayella Ewell. I believe that Tom Robinson relates well with Atticus' quote because he is being accused of a crime that he didn't commit.
To kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. Mockingbirds do not cause harm or trouble; in fact their only purpose is to convince others with beautiful music. Tom Robinson’s death can easily be compared to that of a mockingbird; it did no good but also prevented no evil. Mr. Underwood chooses to write an article that basically every citizen of Maycomb can understand, and this proves to the reader the obvious connection between Tom Robinson and the symbol of a mockingbird. Mr. Underwood chooses to ignore the prominent racial barrier that separated Tom Robinson from justice, and chooses to focus on his disability instead.
Both stories, To Kill a Mockingbird and Black Like Me contain racial segregation. The quote, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it"(Lee 30). is said to Scout by Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird. Both of these novels can relate to this quote.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
The division in race causes Tom Robinson to be scared for his life. He understands that even being near a white woman as an African American is not an acceptable position to be in. Scout explains, “I did not understand the subtlety of Toms predicament: he would not have dared strike a white woman under any circumstances and expect to live long, so he took the first opportunity to run-a sure sign of guilt” (Lee 260-261). Tom understands the division in race and how he is in a lower class than the least respected white family. He would never ever try to do something to hurt another soul, much less a white woman.
Scout writes “Tom's death was typical. Typical of a niggers mentality to have no plan. No thought of the future. Just run blind the first chance he saw” (Lee 322). The fact that Scout writes, that Tom was just a typical negro man, show that Tom symbolizes a mockingbird because just from being that minority color, in his time, people thought of him differently, not as an individual but a group.
Emily Callan Due Date: Tuesday, November 4th I am reading the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 281. In this journal I will be predicting and… I predict that Tom Robinson will be convicted of raping Mayella Ewell because of the racism and bias he is facing.
As Atticus Finch said” You never really understand a person until you consider him or her perspective”. This quote relates because it expresses how white people thought of black people until they saw how they felt and how they were treated. This quote also explains how black people were misunderstood by most white people and saw most of them as an animal or non-human simply because of their skin color. Not many black people that were lynched during the 1930s had a chance to be proved innocent or non-guilty. For example, in To Kill a Mockingbird Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell and for being black he was the main and only suspect of the raping.
In chapters 17-24 in To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem and Scout observe their father in court defending Tom Robinson (a black man) from the accusations of the Bob Ewell (a "low grade ' ' white man). Bob Ewell accuses Tom Robinson of sexually assaulting his daughter; Mayella Ewell. Before the fate of Tom Robinson is given in the possession of the jury, both lawyers have a final attempt at convincing the jury that Tom Robinson should/shouldn 't be prosecuted. Atticus starts off his closing remarks with the fact that he believes that the case should have never come to trial and that the case "”is as simple as black and white."
The Symbol of Killing a Mockingbird The book To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, Shows many examples throughout the characters of the book that symbolize Mockingbirds and how. Tom Robinson, one of the symbols of a mockingbird, was a black man who was falsely accused of raping a young girl. Even though the defending evidence was much more factual than the evidence against him he was found guilty and shot 17 times. Another symbol of a Mockingbird is the character Arthur “Boo” Radley who was isolated in his house for most of his this but is still judged by the people of Maycomb.
Tom Robinson is a young African-American who's been accused of raping and abusing Mayella Ewell, a young and closeted white woman. Racial discrimination is hinted throughout Tom’s trial as Atticus Finch explains to Jem that a white man’s word will always win over that of a black man’s - "... In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life" (220). Atticus explains to Jem that in the courts of Maycomb, a black man’s state of innocence or guilt is truly determined by a white man’s testimony.
How did prejudice happen in this world that God made? Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. In this world, there are a lot of prejudice. Prejudice doesn´t happen suddenly but it happens from a root. Everything happens from a root and that causes to be or do something.

Tom was always kind to Mayella by helping her with things to do because he felt bad that she was always working. He passed one day and she asked him to get the box on top of the chiffarobe, so he got on the chair and got it then she put her hands around his leg, but she claims that he threw her down and raped her.
