What effect does surface type have on atmospheric temperature caused by the greenhouse gas effect? When answering this question it is important to understand all aspects of it. For example, according to NASA, Earth’s atmosphere consists of the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Thermosphere, Mesosphere, Ionosphere, Exosphere. The Stratosphere contains the Ozone layer. “The ozone layer, which absorbs and scatters the solar ultraviolet radiation, is in this layer.”(NASA). When the Earth’s atmospheric temperature increases, there are consequences such as a rising sea level, melting glacier and the elimination of crops that thrive in cold weather. Examples of greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane gas, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. Carbon dioxide is the most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for eighty two percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions in 2015(EPA United States Protection Agency). Carbon dioxide is released through the burning of fossil fuels as well as through certain chemical reactions. Carbon dioxide can be removed from the atmosphere by plants in what is known as the carbon cycle. Greenhouse gases do not just leave the atmosphere at any time. According to the EPA, greenhouse gases may take anywhere from a few years to thousands of years to leave the atmosphere. If there is a larger quantity of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, temperatures rise due to the heat being trapped by the gases. Certain surfaces can absorb more heat instead of reflecting it, greenhouse gases will cause a rise in the atmospheric temperature of the Earth. “Some of the heat will head away from the Earth, some of it will be absorbed by another greenhouse gas molecule, and some of it will wind up back at the planet’s surface again. With more greenhouse gases, heat will stick around, warming the planet.”(UCAR Center for Science Education).
