Flappers Picture yourself one day walking outside and seeing someone dressed nearly naked. This was what flappers were like in the 1920’s. With World War I over and many love ones lost women started to change their lifestyles a bit. Flappers would wear short skirts, cut their hair very short, apply lots of makeup, and reveal lots of skin. Before this era women would wear long dresses that touched the ground, even the glimpse of someone’s ankle was considered to be racy, they wore big hats, and their sleeves would go to their wrists. In the early 1920’s women had a role of getting married, having children, taking care of children, cooking, cleaning, and too much more. It was very rare to see a women outside of the household. Flappers would dress up with their hair cut in a bob, dramatically high hemlines, lots of makeup, and high heels. Before this era ladies would dress in long gowns barely revealing any skin. Many parents would not like having their kids look up too this sort of apparel. Besides their clothing flappers would overindulge in alcohol, smoking, and sex. These excessive habits that undermined the progress of women by making the appear irresponsible and out of control (). Many also disapproved the fact that they neglected their education and couldn’t make commitments like child-birth of marriage. Flappers prized style over substance, novelty over tradition, and pleasure over virtue (Ferentinos). A widespread attitude by women during the early 1920’s, was that women’s roles and men’s roles did not overlap. This idea of “separate spheres” said that women should stick with home, children, and religion, while men took care of business and politics (Benner). Even when women gained the right to vote they were slow in using their new privilege. Flappers would often go to work in the city all day, and at night would go out and spend all of their money. On top of that they would do many things that were frowned upon by society. Also this went against their morals. This made many people lose respect for them. Many of these flappers eventually confessed that they were violating their own codes of ethics in an effort to live up to the huge hype
