Your book What Happened to Cass McBride opened a whole new perspective to me. Not only was the book entertaining and full of suspense, it had a meaningful message. The themes in this story of bullying, suicide, and verbal abuse opened my eyes to the dangers of the world. I personally a not affected by the themes of suicide since I am not depressed, but the themes of bullying and verbal abuse really struck a chord. Being a minority, I am subject to racist comments, whether it was meant to be a joke or an ignorant, hurtful comment. I know how it is to be on the receiving end, but after reading this book, I became more self-aware of the words I say. I set high expectations for myself and others, so much to the point that even I cannot make them. When people fail to expect my expectations, I get frustrated. Your book helped show just how much words can affect others and oneself. One part of the story I found compelling was when Cass says, "I never thought a few careless words scrawled on a piece of paper could put two people in graves." (Giles 51) This quote shows the carelessness and ignorance of Cass. First off, putting that note under her desk and leaving it vulnerable for someone else besides her friend to read was very careless. Second off, she didn't know that those few words could make David commit suicide and cause an outraged Kyle to bury her alive. Although this case is extreme in that an average person would not bury their bully alive, it shows the consequences that can occur because of words you say. Even the smallest words can have a huge effect on someone. This helped me realize the power of my words.
