America Founded on Immigration When reading “Our Brave New World of Immigration” by Victor Davis Hanson, he argues that we ask too little of our immigrants in today’s society, and that we have entered a new world of immigration that allows immigrants to not be responsible human beings in society today. After viewing the title of the essay, I expected to hear an empowering essay on how far immigration has come. However, after reading the essay I perceived the authors’ persona to be belittling towards immigration. Also, he seems to have tunnel vision towards undocumented immigrants, by not considering that the undocumented immigrants, he speaks of may not even be undocumented immigrants.

Immigration, a topic people have countless differences on. So many are for it: so many are against it. If researched, it does not seem immigrants a great of an effect on America. Many Americans are unemployed simply because immigrants take jobs. Turn on the television, and one hears about is higher crime rates.
New Americans come to the United States to experience the land of opportunity and hopefully live a better life than in their homeland. Immigrants come here for something known as the “five freedoms” (“Destination America”). These freedoms consist of the freedom to worship, freedom from oppression, freedom from want, freedom from fear and freedom to create. They want to be able to choose how to live and not be punished in the process.

Longer lives in the northern colonies meant that parents continued to control their children far longer than parents in southern colonies. 2. They have created and discovered many things to help us to live a better life. Immigrants positively influenced the industry of entertainment, science, and religion and made our country what it is today.
Mexicans have learned to adapt to the different political and cultural ways of United States after migration. In the 19th century and from the 1880’s to 1930’s that’s the time that most migration took place in America. Immigration came to America to live a better life, like to seek better economy opportunities. In 1930’s the great depression hit the immigrants.
It really amazed me when I was reading the book about how fast people were coming to America to gain religious freedom, or were they. Was the rule of the pope causing the mass migration? There were five million immigrates that came to America between 1815, and 1860 (Koester, 2015 p. 90). During this time, the growth of Catholics was astonishing. This started to alarm the established religious groups to a point where the movement for anti-Catholics took hold.

Thirdly and foremost, the final way immigrants are handled unfairly is that judgmental people uses unnecessary violence against legal or illegal immigrants. Violence has evolved significantly, especially how police handles them. For example, the article states “Witnesses told police that the two men beat the victim with a metal pole repeatedly and walked away laughing, according to a press release from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. The elder Leader brother, Scott, later told police they attacked him because he was ‘homeless,’ ‘Hispanic,’ and an ‘illegal immigrant.’ ” (Ferrigno, “Donald Trump: Boston beating is ‘terrible’).
The requirements of becoming a citizen in the United States have changed drastically over the last few centuries. Becoming a US citizen is a lengthy, stressful and expensive process. Parts of the process are based luck, while other parts are based on tests and interviews. Through history, the process of becoming a citizen has gotten harder and harder. Edwidge Danticat’s short story “Caroline’s Wedding”, the processing center at Ellis Island and the historical change of immigration laws show and compare the struggle of becoming a citizen in the United States.
Immigration is the act of coming to live in a foreign country. Immigration has changed in many ways over the past decades. Although it has changed drastically, it still remains the same in some ways. Almost all of the immigrants come here to pursue the “American Dream” and have better lives for them and their families back in their countries of origin. Whenever there is an opportunity to work they don’t think about it twice and go for it.
