Summary of what I Learned This Term
This term we have had an excellent teaching on social injustices that exist in our societies. There are many social injustices that are practiced in our societies. The most common form is racism which is the discrimination of an individual due to the color of their skin. This issue has affected our societies ever since the slave trade era. It can be said that colonialism which led to slave trade marked the commencement of racism. During this period, black people were mistreated and sold in auctions like animals which was a very inhumane practice. I still find it hard to believe that human beings were sold as properties to other people. Trying to imagine an auction to sell people is quite unfathomable for me. This shows how humans can stoop really low in how they treat other people. I cannot imagine how the poor slaves were feeling when being sold off to their new masters. I would like to think that they felt like animals such as cows or sheep. This thought was really sickening and that is why I was very captivated by this lesson on slavery. The idea that there is some part of their world where anything that resembles slavery still goes on also makes my stomach churn. However, the lesson also made me realize that there can be good from other people and in this case those who fought to end slavery. The lesson made me realize the importance of organizations that fight for human rights. From the lesson, I have decided that I would play a more active role in such organizations in our society so that we would help eradicate all forms of social injustices that exist in our …show more content…

Traditionally and in most, blacks have been the most common victims of racism perpetrated by the white people. Barragan’s book focuses on racism in the United States. The book begins by giving accounts of violent murders of people of African American origin by white civilians or the police. The author explains that these killings were unjust and also based on race. For instance, he gives the story of a 23-year-old man by the name Amadou Diallo who was killed by an older white man for listening to “gangster music.” Another book that was discussed in the lesson was Pearson’s “Lynching in the Age of Color Blindness: A Crime against Humanity” which also discusses killings of persons of African American decent.
