A Common Tragedy A recurring theme throughout history is women getting the shorter end of the stick when in a relationship with a man. Whether it’s a partnership, romantic relationship, or friendship, horrors sometimes occur. For example, in Hamlet, both Gertrude and Ophelia had tragic ends because of the men in their life. It’s a sad fate and it still occurs today. Sometimes in the past and in society today, women don’t keep a level head on their shoulders. They think they need a man and fall into the trap of not thinking for themselves. This can lead to their own destruction, which occurred in Hamlet. There are many “what ifs” that could have saved the two women in this novel. All in all, due to Gertrude and Ophelia getting involved with the men in the story, Hamlet, they suffered the consequences many women have also faced. In Hamlet, the destruction of Gertrude all started when she married the man that killed her husband. Even though she didn’t know of Claudius's schemes, she rushed into a marriage and ended up getting killed for it in the end. If she would’ve wiser, she would have waited to get remarried so that she would of went into marriage with a clearer head. This tends to happen when women are so “in love” and gets brainwashed into believing anything their significant other does or says. Sadly, they completely lose all reason. Gertrude seemed to understand where Hamlet was coming from when they chatted in her bedroom, but the second she talked to the new king, she completely disregarded what Hamlet had to say. Maybe Gertrude didn’t want to believe the truth because she didn’t want to lose another husband again. That fear of losing someone can be a common one in women and it can hinder them from the love they do
