A film I have seen that had an effect of American culture was American History X (Tony Kaye, 1998). The film was controversial because the similarities within the film are present in American society today. A big problem in society is racism. There are several people that deny that it still exists, but recent events have proven otherwise. An example of racism is the case of Dylan Roof, who killed 9 African Americans, in a church while they were praying. His reasoning being that “he wanted to start a race war”. Another movie I have seen that can be related to American society is Training Day (Antoine Fuqua, 2001). Recently there has been a lot of bad press on police officers with what citizens deem as unnecessary force or abuse of power. These remarks are coming from the shootings of several unarmed civilians by police officers. There have even been retaliations where civilians are opening fire on police officers. We cannot function as a society if we cannot trust the people that are appointed to uphold the law. The hatred is understandable towards police officers, but you can’t judge all officers by a few mistakes done by others. It is not fair for anybody when that happens. Another film that had an impact on our society was The Interview (Evan Goldberg & Seth Rogen, 2014). The film sparks controversy because it is about Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea. A celebrity tabloid show, hosted by Dave Skylark (James Franco), lands a surprise interview with Kim Jong-un, who is a fan of the show. The Central Intelligence Agency learns of the interview and wants to setup an assassination of the Jong-un. The film plays a role in society because Kim Jong-un is the leader of North Korea and is expanding his nuclear weapon capabilities. He is a threat to the United States of America and hearing about the things he’s done to his own people can be
