Everyone knows the foundation of marriage is based on trust, respect, and love—but what happens when two of the three components are missing? Even when one of the ingredients is missing, it can lead to an unsuccessful relationship. In Much Ado About Nothing, Claudio, a young soldier, falls in love with Hero, the fair and intelligent daughter of Leonato; she reciprocated the feelings, but how will their relationship work when Claudio lacks respect and trust for Hero, possibly even real love? Claudio and Hero’s relationship will not work because Claudio makes many assumptions without confrontation, lacks reasonable responses in heated situations, and was cruel to Hero.

When Claudio is, again, tricked by Don John and believes Hero is cheating on him, instead of actually speaking to her, or making sure it was actually her since he did not see her face, he decides to take a more immature and unusually shabby approach. Claudio decides his plan of action, and tells Don Pedro and Don John, “If I see anything tonight why I should not marry her, tomorrow in the congregation, where I should wed, there will I shame her” (Act 3, Scene 2, Lines 96-98). In this explanation, Claudio states if he does ‘catch’ her cheating, he will go through with the wedding ceremony the next day, but only to publicly shame her. Instead of just breaking off the engagement or confronting her, he chooses to go through with the incredibly spiteful action. The way Claudio handles situations is undeniably unreasonable; there are possibilities of him acting irrationally in the future when he and Hero are married, which could create a rift in their marriage. Claudio constantly chooses to act disrespectful and petty towards those he has issues with. Instead of acting like a grown man, he acts like a child, which is why his relationship with Hero will not
