Her owner, Eleven-year-old Sarah Grimke, is an abolitionist who got Handful as a birthday present and is forced to accept her by her parents. Kidd wrote this historical-fiction book not only to entertain, but also to provide the reader with a perspective of an awful time in history.
It shows her transition into happiness and recognising the blessings in her life. This book is cyclic; it begins and finishes with the girl in her bedroom with a negative view on how the day begins and ends. But then there is a tonal shift on page 23 when she says, “But suddenly there it is right in front of you bright and vivid quietly waiting”. The use of symbolism is used through a bright red leaf. The leaf is a constant motif throughout the book representing her blessings and the good things in her life, but she hadn’t taken the time to notice it.
She constantly strives towards her goals, with unflagging optimism and high spirits. Welty brilliantly chose vital symbols such as the windmill, the phoenix and the hunter to instill a deeper intuition for her readers. The ceiling glittered with different color crystal formations----white and purple and green, like I was inside of one of those cut geodes you see in souvenir shops. I was lying on a comfortable bed with feather pillows and cotton sheets. The cave was divided into sections by white silk curtains. Against on wall stood a large loom and a harp.

Society used slurs to offend mostly the colored community as were seen lower on the social ladder and were primarily used by the white, wealthy community.
