Bill Blass, one of the greatest-fashion designers of the twentieth century, was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 22, 1922. His father Ralph Blass was a salesperson, and his mother, Ethyl Keyser was a seamstress. Blass had a successful fashion career to where he was an innovator and a reviver of fashion in the 1970’s. Blass worked in the fashion industry for more than 50 years, and in those long tiresome years, he earned the right to be considered an American legend in fashion. He loved all things glamour and he was able to make a successful life by designing things that appealed to women with garments, and items that appealed to men with cars. He dealt with swimwear, perfume, furs, chocolate, luggage, and even had a series of automobiles he helped design with Ford Motor Company. He even claimed himself to be the first
American designer of women clothing to start designing menswear clothing. He enjoyed incorporating menswear style to fit women’s aesthetics in fashion, and because of this he was able to make a lot of money from it. He was brilliant as a businessman and he knew exactly who his customers were going to be, and he knew exactly what they expected and wanted from him as a designer.
During the 70’s, Blass was booming with innovating designs. His blazers were a big success during this time for women because of their pristine look, and that they could pair with trousers and look professional and young. Another famous Bill Blass look was the fur-trimmed wrap coat that made any outfit look like it was worth more than it actually was. The fur-trimmed coat was meant to make a woman look wealthier. In 1972, Blass introduced his ready to wear sportswear line, which became a very successful hit. Blassport was more affordable to all women who wanted to own something designed by Bill Blass. In 1975, Blass revived the 1920’s famous cocktail dress and put his own touch of magic to the new and improved garment. He also added his signature perfume to the list of achievements he accomplished during the 1970’s. This period in time in Blass’ life was his platform to his success.
