What Is Hypnos's Role In The Trojan War

Imagine having to choose a side in a war between the reigning powerful or help the side in need of it, and having the ability to put people to sleep so you can do what you want. Hypnos lives in the underworld and is the son of Nyx and Erebus. Some people might say that being able to put people to sleep isn’t the most powerful thing that can be done, but it played an important role in the Trojan War. Hypnos is very powerful because he had a heavy influence on the Trojan War, he put Zeus to sleep twice so they could win the war, and he risked his life to help Hera and Poseidon. Hypnos is very loyal because he stayed on one side during the Trojan War. Hypnos started his role by tricking Zeus. “The first time, Hera devised a plan to avenge the ransacking of Troy by Heracles, Zeus' son” (Schuster, Web). The significance of them being able to ransack the kingdom of Troy is that it was home to very powerful people and their animals. “Hera and Thanatos could then bring the body of Sarpedon back to his native Lydia. Sarpedon was a Lycian prince and a hero in the Trojan War, killed before Troy's gates in the battle against the Greeks.” (Sutherland, Web). The second time Hypnos was asked he initially refused to, but when he was bribed with an arranged marriage he agreed. He made Hera swear by oath by the river of forgetfulness. “After Hypnos made Hera swear an oath by the river Styx that she would fulfill her part of the bargain, he agreed to help her.” (Schuster, Web). Lots of great things were done while Zeus was asleep, but this one might have had the greatest impact. If Hypnos didn’t put Zeus to sleep they wouldn’t have been able to do this.
