One of the basic nature/instincts that humans have is to be powerful and have control. With enough greed or motivation, humans will do almost anything to achieve their goals even if the means to the end are pure evil. Even though someone may be on a bad path of evilness it does not mean that they are evil unless they know from the bottom of their hearts that they have no empathy.
While Lady Macbeth was not evil her evil acts eventually caught up to her and were overwhelmed with guilt that leads her to take her own life. While reflecting on her past behaviors and decisions Lady Macbeth says “The Thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now? What, will these hands ne’er be clean? No more o’ that, my lord, no more o’ that” (5.1.44-46). Through that desire, the darkness inside of Macbeth came out which put him on a path of evilness. After hopes of being promoted Thane and shocked that Malcolm was chosen instead of him goes aside, starts talking to himself and says “Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires” (1.4.57-58). In other words, Macbeth knows he is planning to do something or many things that he knows is evil but is so corrupted with greed that he is “asking” for the stars to not shine there the light on him so that nobody will know what kind of deeds he has been doing. The fact that Macbeth is conscious and aware of what is about to do and being ashamed of it shows that there is more than just evil inside of him but that there is a good human being in theirs. When someone is doing things that are morally unacceptable or cloudy; if the person is aware that what they're doing is wrong and should be stopped shows that they have some sort of empathy and that in their heart they are not
