Maria Edgeworth in her 1801 novel described a very complex character by the name of Clarence Hervey. She uses various literary techniques to get her point across. Edgeworth within the excerpt explains the complexity of the character allowing the reader to get a view into the chameleon character. Through the use of tone, point of view, and language Edgeworth through the narrator was able to give an in depth view into the ways and actions of Clarence Hervey. With the use of tone the author was able to bring this story altogether, using tone almost as the glue to this excerpt. The author must take into heavy consideration what point of view they use as it plays a vital role in literature. "He did not think it incumbent on him to be more scrupulous or more attentive to appearances than her ladyship. By Lord Delacour's jealousy he was sometimes provoked , sometimes amused, and sometimes flattered". This gives the reader insight into the mind of Hervey. The stories ' third person omniscient point of view allows the reader to be inside the head of every character. Not only can the reader learn what others think of him but what he thinks of himself and the people around him. If this story did not have the same point of view it would not have been as impactful.
