Letter from Birmingham City Jail, by Martin Luther King (MLK). MLK wanted to end segregation, but had to try and do it from jail (which was hard enough). He decided to write a letter to the clergymen, telling that all about his experience, views, and what was happening, so they could hopefully help him get equal rights for the blacks. MLK made a claim saying that the whites treated the blacks like they didn’t even matter and even treated them like property. So he decided to take matters into his own hands and get the rights that the blacks deserved, which was to end all of the segregation as peaceful as he could, without anyone getting hurt.
Nonviolent resistance is one strategy that can be used in any movement or retaliation. In the 1960s, one man, named Martin Luther King, Jr. very much supported that idea. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham City Jail" is an inquisitive piece of writing, written while MLK was imprisoned in Birmingham in 1963 for his peaceful protests against racial segregation. A response to a critical newspaper article published by local Clergymen, it challenges priorly accepted doctrines and makes many compelling arguments. King's most compelling statement is "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" because it the denounces toleration of injustice and those who allow it (King). When King says "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere", he is implying that if even the smallest act of unfairness is tolerated, it will take root and spread (King).
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” he is addressing the Clergymen, more specifically the white church and its leadership who criticized his efforts in the civil rights movement, by calling his demonstrations unwise and untimely. He is also simultaneously addressing the national audience as well in letting them know of the injustices of the time. It was 1963, and Martin Luther King Jr. wrote this letter from inside a jail cell. He had been arrested during an anti-segregation march for not having a valid parading permit in Birmingham, Alabama. The fight for minority rights in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s was an age of civil disobedience. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the main instigators that made vigorous displays of civil disobedience through peaceful marches, speeches and publications. In “Letters from Birmingham Jail” Martin Luther King Jr. writes a response to statements made by clergymen in which he strongly defends and expresses that his actions and the actions of his followers, were just and reasonable. The letter King writes is from his prison cell in Birmingham jail where he was imprisoned for parading without a permit when representing the Southern Christian Conference. Although King is in an upsetting situation, he does not regret the choices he made, but yet supports them. He mentions how the clergymen claimed that he was acting quickly, he then points out that, “We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights.” (King 91)
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is an American Icon. Born in 1929 he was a Baptist minister from Atlanta, Georgia who is arguably the most prominent Civil Rights leader in American history. Up until his assassination in 1968, he led a movement based on nonviolent demonstrations and protests that helped to end segregation in the southern United States and put an end to the status quo that had endured for centuries. In 1963, he allowed himself to be arrested intentionally for demonstrating without permits in Birmingham Alabama. I believe that paragraphs 9 and 12 from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” are the strongest paragraphs in this letter of his. These paragraph is so profound and truly explain why segregation is unjust in two short paragraphs. They don’t go into a lot of detail on why segregation is unjust, because they don’t need to. They’re argument is strong enough with how short they are. Since these paragraphs give an easy to understand and short reasoning as to why segregation is unjust, explains what makes a law just or unjust, and show that just laws can be unjust when applied to situations such as segregation, I believe they are the strongest paragraphs in this letter.

Where does right and wrong come from? Is it created or natural? If it’s created, who determines it and if it’s natural what’s the source? Maybe nobody truly knows or maybe it is impossible to know, but we can attempt to get close to what is moral. In a sense, there is only, really, two main sources that we could say “good” and “bad” originate from, it’s either made from government or religion, or it’s something that we grow up with and know naturally.

In the letter kind defended Kings beliefs on Nonviolent Protests, King also counters the accusations of him breaking laws by categorizing segregation laws into just and unjust laws. King uses this principle to help persuade others to join him in his acts of civil disobedience.

For other groups of people, it served as a reminder of the misdirection that the United States of America had been taking in terms of moving forward. Together, they compile into a collection of political, social, and moral reactions of various populations towards the civil rights movement and towards African Americans. Specifically, these were positive and negative reactions that were perceived towards Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, the “I Have a Dream” speech, and the civil rights campaign which had originated in Birmingham, Alabama.
