From Scout’s perspective, she, as well as Jem, view Mrs. Dubose as an irate and racist old woman who frequently calls out insults from her front porch, “Mrs. Dubose would become bored and pick on us: ‘Jeremy Finch, I told you you’d live to regret tearing up my camellias. You regret it now, don’t you?’” (Lee 146). Nonetheless, it is only later in the novel that Mrs. Dubose’s true strength is revealed. The central conflict of the scene occurs through Jem’s punishment, and realization as well as Mrs. Dubose’s inner conflict in her fight against her own morphine addiction.
Atticus sends Jem to go and talk to Ms Dubose after he cut all the flowers in her garden. Scout is worried for her brother so when her and Atticus were sitting on the couch he told her: This case, Tom Robinson’s case, it’s something that goes to the essence of a man's conscience. Scout i couldn't go to church and worship God if i didn't try to help this man.
Even if Scout said hi, Mrs Dubose reply back, “Dont u say hey to me, you ugly girl! You say good afternoon, Mrs. Dubose!”(99). This led Jem and Scout to believe that she was just a old mean lady that did nothing but interrogated them and banter about. Moreover Mrs. Dubose statement about his father being, “no better than the niggers and trash he works for” (102) hit Jems nerve or patience. Yet after he came every afternoon after school and saturdays to read to her out loud for two hours” (105), who he realized was just really sick.
Dubose. Throughout chapter 11, Jem and Scout talk about how much they hate Mrs. Dubose. They claimed she was the mean lady that would yell at them every time they walked by. “Don’t say that to me, you ugly girl! You say good afternoon, Mrs. Dubose!”
Atticus is able to admire Mrs. Dubose's courage even while she makes fun of Atticus for being a nigger lover. No matter how mean she could be to him he would still treat her with respect. Throughout the novel Scout changes from being a tom-boy to a girly-girl. She used to wear trousers now she wears pink dresses.
A person’s exterior does not reflect their true personality, and rumours are not always true. In Chapter 3, Atticus tells Scout, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (39). To Jem and Scout, Mrs. Dubose is merely a grumpy old lady who does nothing but insult them. However, it is only after she dies does Jem discover she suffers from a morphine addiction, allowing him to realize that her hurtful words are caused by her pain. Similarly, Robinson is perceived as a vile person due to all the negative beliefs circulating around his ethnicity.
Dubose. Scout, Jem’s younger sister, calls Mrs. Dubose“plain hell.” (Lee 7). Mrs. Dubose is not a likable woman, a point made further clear when Scout describes her as “Horrible. Her face was the color of a dirty pillowcase, and the corners of her mouth glistened with wet,” (Lee 142).
Dubose every day for a month. Mrs. Dubose wasn’t a kind lady, she would frequently insult Jem and Scout as well as Atticus on their actions and behaviors; but Atticus saw past that. Atticus saw Mrs. Dubose as “a great lady”(149), someone who doesn’t give up. While she was a grumpy person, she was also fighting a morphine addiction so she could be free before she died. Atticus wanted Jem to read to her so he could “see what real courage is”(149), so he would see that as courage rather than “a man with a gun in his hand”(149).
Dubose continuously insults Jem and Scout. One day, as Jem and Scout were walking by, she insulted Atticus for taking Tom’s case. Jem made an attempt at defending his father by destroying her camellias (type of plant). Atticus thought his way of handling Mrs. Dubose was unwise, and to try and prevent him from acting like this again, he sent Jem to Mrs. Dubose’s house to read to her. Shortly after Jem ended his reading sessions with her, she unfortunately passed away.
The introduction of her character gives people an opportunity to empathize with her despite her racist views. Atticus wants Jem and Scout to consider the situations that may have shaped her perspective. In this chapter, Scout's interaction with Mrs. Dubose reveals a significant display of empathy. Despite Mrs. Dubose being bitter and racist, Atticus wants Scout to be kind and understanding towards her. Scout's visits to Mrs. Dubose's house make her realize she is struggling with addiction.
In part one of the story To Kill A Mockingbird, the tertiary character Mrs. Dubose has significance in the story because her behavior makes Jem realize that after all of Mrs. Dubose’s horrible behavior, there are other intentions behind some of Mrs. Dubose’s actions, for example, why Mrs. Dubose uses so much help from other people, and what message Mrs. Dubose is trying to send with the actions she takes. Every day for a month, Scout and Jem read to Mrs. Dubose. As punishment for Jem tearing apart her Camellia bush, Scout thinks to herself, “It suddenly came to me that each day we had been staying a little longer at Mrs. Dubose’s, that the alarm clock went off a few minutes later every day. . . Today she [Mrs. Dubose] antagonized Jem for nearly two hours with no intention of having a fit,”
Sometime later their neighbor Mrs. Dubose, a racist old lady with a morphine addiction talks bad about Atticus defending Tom Robinson, “Your father’s no better then the nigger and trash he works for!” (116). Mrs. Dubose, also known as “like hell” and a senile women is an example of someone who doesn’t always deserve dignity. She’s a morphine addict who is also cranky, strict, rude, and racist. When Atticus sees here everyday, he walks by and complaints here. Even though she mocks Atticus for defending Tom, he ignores it and does the same routine the next day. Dubose, the grouchy old lady as it seemed to Jem and Scout, in fact had an unexpected story that the both of them had no clue about. This is where the understanding of perspective enters their life once Atticus explains to them. “Jem and I hated her. If she was on the porch when we passed, we would be raked by her wrathful gaze, subjected to ruthless interrogation regarding our behavior, and given a melancholy prediction on what we would amount to when we grew up, which was always nothing.” Scout always had a negative vibe come from Mrs. Dubose until it is learned that Mrs. Dubose is a morphine addict.
