The definition of a sterotype is, "A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. " In the interactions between Huck and Jim, I do believe that Jim is being stereotyped. Although Jim is perceived as ultimately much more of an adult than any other character in this book, intelligent, and practical, it is shown that that stereotyping is an underlying theme with this character. He is your typical black slave, who believes in all of the superstitions that he was most likely taught to believe him, being from a slave family.
Prompt 4 To begin with this book by Mark Twain is uncivilized free and wild thinking. For example Huckleberry Finn the main charterer is uncivilized because he is uneducated. This is mainly because his father didn't allow him to have an education “you think you’re better’n your father now, don’t you, because he can’t”(21) this was stated by pap the night he reappeared and he asked Huck to read to him.
Throughout American history, minorities have been discriminated against for numerous things relating to race, gender, religion, etc. One group that was discriminated around the time of the Civil War were the Blacks. Throughout American history, they were thought of as inferior to whites and treated like animals. After the Civil War, laws started to change in favor of Blacks, things like making it illegal to enslave them, making them citizens and giving them the right to vote. These laws didn’t eliminate discrimination, though, and failed to change the opinion of what most thought of the Blacks.
The appropriateness of Huck Finn being used in a High School curriculum has been a widely debated topic since the time that it was published. Many believe that the book promotes racism and stereotypes and provides no value to students in the classroom. Being a High School student that has read this book, I strongly disagree with these negative views. Some might say that Huck Finn celebrates racist stereotypes because of the way that many of the characters in the book talk about and treat black people. For example, minstrel episodes, which served the purpose of making the audience laugh at minorities’ expense, and the frequent use of the ‘N’ word, are very offensive to many people today.
The “n-word” and term “slavery” both have a negative connotation to them, in regards to the book, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, the excessive use of the n-word has negatively impacted the book. As viewed by many, the immoderate use of this word has caused an uproar in schools around the United States and various schools have already begun removing this book from its curriculum. Mark Twain used the n-word a total of 219 times which has lead to many speculating that if students read this book, it will promote the language used in the book, such as the “n-word”. Various books have been censored within the American education system due to their controversial subjects or the use of profane language, examples of this could include “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee being banned in certain school districts [Pen America]. Many people see this book as being a significant portrayal of how growing up and understanding other points of view can benefit one and make them into a better person later in life, which is an important life lesson this book teaches despite its language and controversy. To Kill a Mockingbird not only considers racial issues, but also gender norms and the importance of getting to know someone, so why ban the book? Lisa Fink who authored an article for the National Council of Teachers of English argues that we should stop acting as though To Kill a Mockingbird is progressive regarding racial indifferences, she states “...the messages about race and the status quo are so very outdated.” (Fink) when that could not be further from the truth.
Twain does his best to deal with the conflict between society and the individual. Huck does not want to abide by society’s laws and does not want to conform in Mark Twain’s, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck is forced to be civilized in the beginning, so he leaves society for freedom and lives by his own rules but even that does not make Huck’s life easy. Huck has trouble obeying society’s rules from the start of the book. The Widow Douglas takes Huck in to try to sivilize him says Huck in the quote, “The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me”(Twain 2).
Racism has existed from the beginning of early human civilization all the way to present day. In a main part racism has been allowed to thrive because of cultural unawareness between different races, and because of society's acceptance to generalized stereotypes. Many individuals feel that racism is a major problem and two authors who try to tackle racism are Mark Twain and Esha Dholia. In Twain’s novel, Huckleberry Finn, a young white adolescent named Huck escapes from his abusive father and goes on an adventure with a runaway slave named Jim. In Esha Dholia’s article of “Too Many Tropes” Dholia summarizes the top three stereotypes South Asians face in western media.
The black man on the back porch is afraid of the rattle snake because it is bad luck, or the innocent little slave is quick to believe everything one tells them at the drop of the hat. These are just some of the many racist stereotypes of the 1840s. A character named Jim is the star African American whom Twain bestoys the mission of being the stereotypical black man to prove a point. He along with his much more pallor companion Huck go on exciting adventures that unfold the events which expose the racist conduct of the time. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain saturates his novel with potent images of acute racism severe enough as to create a satirical mien that exposes the absurdity of prejudice.
Women played a major role during WW1. When man started going to war, women started taking the initiative to complete the jobs that were usually done by men and as the realized that they could do just as work the men did, the women started demanding for equal pay. Along with that, a group of women called the famous five started to fight for women’s right to vote and the persons case. Without women taking this approach, the society would have fallen apart. Therefore, women played a significant role during WW1 because their social actions determined the gender equality in Canada’s society today.
In summary, the controversial issue of racial equality and racism, in effect, makes Huck’s relationship with slaves (like Jim) slowly grow stronger throughout the novel. Moreover, racial equality and racism also affect the way Huck chooses to reject the societal norms of the late nineteenth century in order to bring two races together. In addition, everyone should understand the importance of racial equality and racism because of the stain they have left on American history and society as well as the affect these controversial issues have on people today. Mark Twain portrays a runaway slave, Jim, as a racist caricature who does whatever is asked of him and exhibits little intelligence. The reader can initially see this through the use of the word "nigger" that is all throughout the book. In the modern 21st century this term is taken offensively, but in the 19th century this term was commonly used and Twain took advantage of it.
Rosa Parks once said, “Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome.” She describes that the future of our world has to be aware of things that have happened in the past, such as racism. The NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is a civil rights organization that displayed their position on this certain situation. The NAACP position is correct in that Mark Twain’s un-sanitized version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be taught because the book describes the important awareness of the historical oppression of people, it provides a value of morality from that time period that students should learn, and gives an important lesson about race that should be taught to students.
