Cells are the building blocks of all living things in life. According to a Biologist website an adult human have about 37.2 trillion cells in its body. I knew we had a lot of cells but I didn’t expect us to have this many cells in our body. What I found to be so fascinating is with the amount of cells we have in our bodies we would be able to rotate around earth almost nineteen times. Then it came across my mind if we have all these cells in our body what ensures the safety of them and how do the cells get from one location to another with no disruptions. The reason that the cells are protect is because of the cell membrane. The structure of the cell membrane is crucial to the life of a cell.

The cell membrane is a thin semi-permeable membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosing its contents. The cell membrane is very selective on what comes to into the cell and this process is called the selective preamble membrane. The cell membrane structure is shaped as a phosphate head at the very outer surface, and two fatty acid tails hanging from it. The membrane is double, so at the tip of the fatty acid tails, there are two more fatty acid tails attached to another phosphate head. The main reason that the cell membrane has a structure like this is so it can control the amount of water the cell is receiving and releasing. Not having enough water is a bad thing along with having too much water. When too much water enter the cells and causes it to swell up or explode that is a hypotonic solution. As to the opposite of too much water is to little water will make the cell shrink and die is a hypertonic solution. Isotonic solution is where the cell need to be having an equal amount of solutes in and outside the cell. The phosphate heads are polar, and attracts water. But, the fatty acid tails in between are non-polar and repel water, so the fatty acid tails prevent too much water from entering or leaving the
