Would you want to live in poverty and have freedom or live in luxury and be controlled? In George Orwell’s 1984 those are the two ways of life for people in Oceania. There are two different classes of people the party members and the proles. In this essay, we’ll go over the differences between the lives of the proles and the party members and which class I believe is better to live in. In Oceania the civilians are under a totalitarian government and the people are divided into two classes the proles and the party members. First, we’ll discuss the life of the party members and their goals. Firstly it is said that “The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power.” This was written on page 263. Next, there are two different types of party members the inner party and the outer party. The inner party is the upper class of Oceania and they are the ones who control the government and control every aspect of the other citizen's lives. The proles have limited access to information meaning everything they read, watch, or listen to has been approved by the inner party and is used to prevent them from having differing views from the party. The proles are less watched over than the outer party members because the inner party doesn’t believe they are a threat.
