What Is The Difference Between Aldi And Trader Joe's

Consumers looking to save money and shop at a food market that has that hometown feel need look no further than Aldi or Trader Joe’s. Each store offers unique products ranging from organic, gluten free, store-brand, and name-brand products. While it is true that Aldi and Trader Joe’s are owned by members of the Albrecht family, they are not sister companies. I visited the new Aldi location in Wentzville, Missouri and spoke to the manager of the store who gave me this background information about the two companies. Aldi is a German based company that has stores in multiple countries, while Trader Joe’s is only found in the United States. While both stores offer low-priced products and value for the money, there are some differences that I noticed between the two stores.
Location of the stores was one of the things I found interesting. Aldi has ninety-seven locations in Missouri, while Trader Joe’s only has five – four in the St. Louis area, and one in Kansas City. Aldi appears to market their locations to the lower and middle class, but they have started to branch out into more upscale areas such as Chesterfield, Missouri. Trader Joe’s appeared to cater to more of the organic, clean food individuals, while Aldi simply offers lower prices, which in turn is geared more to those individual on a tighter budget and looking to save as much as possible on the grocery list. Age also played a factor in the demographics. Both of the stores attracted people of all ages and walks of life, but younger, more “cutting edge” shoppers favored Trader Joe’s, as well as the those “seasoned” shoppers that made wise investments with their money, and elect to shop at a more upscale, local feel food market.
